An Edwardian mahogany and boxwood line inlaid lady's folding dressing table with silver fittings

Attributed to George Betjemann & Sons and probably retailed by Maple & Co
Of typical design, the hinged top enclosing a foldout triptych bevelled mirror above a hinged surface revealing glass folding shelves and an extensive fitted interior of silver mounted accessories including hob nail cut glass jars and bottles, a hand mirror, brushes, vanity accessories etc, some with maker's mark of George Betjemann and Sons, others with mark of Charles Henry Dumenil, labelled with an ivory label RD No 541493, above two short drawers on square tapering legs, silver plated caps and steel castors, size when closed: 89.5cm wide x 58cm deep x 94cm high, (35in wide x 22 1/2in deep x 37in high)

A related dressing table made by Betjemann and retailed by Finnigans Ltd was sold at Bonhams, London, 3 June 2015, lot 266 as well as one retailed by Maples which was sold by Bonhams, London, 11 March 2015, lot 210 from the estate of Dior model, Maggy Sarragne (1923-2014).

Two examples of this stylish dressing table, one in mahogany and one in satinwood, with varying fittings, have appeared at auction as part of the collections of suitably glamorous vendors in the form of Maria Felix and S.A.R La Principessareale Maria Gabriella Di Savoia. George Betjemann (1798-1886) was the great grandfather of the Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman (1906-1984). George Betjemann was apprenticed to the dressing case maker Gilbert Slater in 1810 and established himself as a dressing case manufacturer, initially in Clerkenwell and later in the Pentonville Road, where they eventually employed 119 people.
