In the Neoclassical taste, probably Continental, perhaps French or Italian, circa 1820, with provenance to Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler
The later veined white marble shelf above a frieze with raised moulded central vase decoration flanked by winged griffins with elaborate multi scrolling acanthus and rosette tails, the jambs similarly cast with raised flambe pedestal torchieres with tripartite paw foot bases, on plain rectangular block feet,
The chimnneypiece not including the later she101cm high, 111cm wide, 12cm deep overall (the inner aperture, 94cm high, 99.5cm wide) approximately
