Provenance
The offered lot was acquired by the current owner and vendor from Richard Gardner Antiques, during the spring of 2003.

Although there are many examples of davenports, presented in a wide assortment of timbers, both designed and made by the firm of Gillow before 1840, arguably the closest drawings, that can be found in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books, to the present model are those dated 1840, ref.'s 5569 & 5570, Westminster City Archive. However, it seems much more likely that the majority of davenports produced in this late Regency vein, with their distinctive galleries, plain panelling and part-lobed feet, date to the decade prior to these aforementioned designs, 1830-1840.
