Head of Sale Carpets and Tapestries
Provenance
By repute, gifted to Frederick Wallingford Whitridge FWW by King Alfonso of Spain upon his marriage to Queen Victoria's granddaughter, Victoria Eugenie.
Housed in the entrance hall of Barley End.
Lt. Col. Norman Thwaites by marriage to Eleanor Whitridge.
Acquired by the present vendor upon the purchase of Barley End.
Whitridge was the special envoy of President Theodore Roosevelt and was a guest at the historic wedding in Madrid between King Alfonso of Spain and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. It is possible that official guests received these panels as gifts. Whitridge was a close friend of President Roosevelt's -a number of letters exchanged between the two men can be found in the Presidential Archives.
Whitridge was an important business figure - owning the Third Avenue Railway company in New York City. He married the granddaughter of Thomas Arnold the famous headmaster of Rugby School. He commissioned and built Barley End in the late 1800s as his UK base but lived in the USA most of the time. The panels were placed into the entrance hall of Barley End. Whitridge's daughter married Colonel Thwaites and they lived at Barley End from 1921 onwards. Thwaites was an intelligence officer for the British Government in New York and a decorated war hero.
