Provenance
The present lot was purchased by the current owner and vendor from Downer Ross, Auctioneers & Valuers, 18 July 1996, Woburn Town Hall Sale, lot 441.
Thereafter, the offered cabinet on stand formed part of the Carl Barnes collection.
Subsequently, significant restoration was undertaken on this piece during the period, 1998-1999, by Charles Perry Restorations Ltd.
Also of interest; paperwork detailing a contemporary auction value for the above piece was supplied to Carl Barnes by Charles Perry Restorations, dated 7 May 1999.
Carl Barnes is a major figure in the world of horology and has been for at least the last thirty years. Over the course of this period, Barnes established two clock and watch fairs in this country, both of which rapidly became major dates in the annual diary of British horological events and engagements. Each one of these fairs has drawn many hundreds of visitors from across the world, including innumerable collectors, dealers and enthusiasts within this field.
In his youth, Carl joined Xerox where he enjoyed a successful career that allowed him to begin collecting in his own right. He has always been most attracted to clocks by those makers active during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and his collection includes examples by some of the very best makers of the 'Golden Age'. Restoration has never been an issue for Carl since he has always been ready to engage the services of some of the best restorers in the business, including Royal warrant holders, Charles Perry, who are specialists in period furniture and clock-case work.
A significant part of the Carl Barnes collection features in the Fine Clocks sale, also taking place here at Bonhams, on 2 December.
