Footnotes

The offered lot is derived from the marble group of the same subject by Pierre Lepautre dating from 1697. First installed at the Château de Marly, it was later moved to the Tuileries and is now held in the permanent collection of the Louvre (M.R. 2028). Lepautre was influenced by a wax model by François Giardon, in his possession from 1696.
