Canton, early 19th century
The larger fan with paper leaf painted to the obverse with an extensive landscape with figures, rockwork, leafy and flowering trees and a meandering river, the figures including maidens playing music, a maiden and a small boy and two maidens crossing a bridge, the reverse similarly decorated with a corresponding figural landscape, the shaped sticks and guard sticks fined carved and engraved with floral cartouches on a pierced floral ground with fan shaped and flower head borders, heightened in polychrome and gilt, with green paste mounted rivet, the second fan with paper leaf painted to the obverse with a central oval landscape depicting a port scene, possibly depicting Canton harbour flanked by two roundels depicting flower and butterflies reserved on a dense ground with carp and previous objects within foliate, cloud and key borders, the reverse similarly decorated with a central oval of a bouquet of flowers and twin birds flanked two oval port landscapes reserves on a similar bordered ground, the shaped sticks and guard sticks engraved with figural pagoda landscapes with riveted gilt metal D shaped handle,
