Sale Coordinator for Furniture, Sculpture, Rugs & Tapestries

Head of Sale Carpets and Tapestries
Provenance
Sotheby's, Chateau de Cornillon, 31 October, 2006, Lot 10.
The offered lot can be dated to the late 15th century, based on the design of the armour. Characteristic features from this period include the sharply pointed solerets at the feet, the articulated poleyns protecting the knees, and the tuilles attached to a fauld made up of four overlapping lames. In addition the facial features, particularly the eyes, marked by their pronounced lids and arched brows, bear a strong resemblance to a comparison figure of Saint Michael housed in the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse. Similarly the figure of St George has a posture which closely mirrors the example at Toulouse, with the left foot slightly lifted and solerets that display a similarly distinctive banding across the instep.
