Footnotes

These are the quartered arms and crests of Richard Benyon De BEAUVOIR (1770-1854) of Englefield House, Berkshire and Gidea Hall, Essex. He was born Richard BENYON at Westminster the eldest son of Richard BENYON (1746-1796) a landowner and MP for Peterborough of Gidea Hall, Essex by Hannah HULSE (1747-1828) eldest daughter of Sir Edward HULSE (1682-1759) 1st Baronet of Breamore House, Hampshire.

Richard Benyon De BEAUVOIR was a landowner, philanthropist and in 1816, as Richard Powlett Wrighte BENYON of Englefield, High Sheriff of Berkshire. He had adopted the later name in 1814 when succeeding to the estates of his late half-uncle Powlett WRIGHTE (1739-1779) of Englefield House, quartering his BENYON arms with those of POWLETT and WRIGHT. In 1822 he additionally inherited significant property from his relative, through his paternal grandmother, Revd. Peter De BEAUVIOR (died 1822) who had been Rector of Devenham, Essex at which time he assumed the name Richard Benyon De BEAUVIOR and adopted the quartered arms and crests that appear in the engraving here.
