A matched pair of George III silver-gilt wine coasters

Digby Scott & Benjamin Smith II, London 1805 and 1806
Circular, the open-work sides cast and chased with scrolling fruiting grapevines, the plain centres engraved with the crest below a Viscounts coronet, the rim of the bases also stamped Rundell Bridge et Rundell Aurifices Regis Et Principis Wallae Londini Fecerunt, underside of bases with wood inserts, diameter 14.3cm.

Footnotes

The arms are those of William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (1757-1844), who was so created on 7 April 1807, becoming a Knight of the Garter a few months later on 18 July. He was married on 12 July 1781 at St. James's, Westminster, to Augusta (1761-1838), eldest daughter of John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmorland, by whom he had six children. He died at York House, Twickenham, near London, at the age of 86.
