A 17th century Norwegian silver peg tankard

stamped only with mark to underside of base, unidentified, the base also engraved '*XXXXX*LOD' and scratched ANNO 1641
Of tall cylindrical form, with engraved upper and lower bands of entwined scrolling strap-work, with foliate motifs and incorporating varying animals, below is a protruding lobed girdle, the band below and domed foot chased with entwined scrolls with masks, fruits and foliage over a stippled ground, scroll handle with similar engraved design, the hinged cover with cast figural thumb-piece resembling Neptune, the shaped hinged cover with similar bands, with central roundel, engraved 'IORREN*FLECK*MARGRET*GØTTRIN' around a central winged figure, the script may possibly the variant language Norrøn, underside of base also with engraved script initials, height 23.5cm, weight 22oz.

The inscription to the cover may be in reference to Queen Margaret I (1353-1412). She was Queen of Denmark, Norway and Sweden and founder of the Kalmar Union, which united the Scandinavian countries for over a century.
