Provenance
Sotheby's, Paris, Excellence, 13 November, 2018, Lot 46.
The refurbishment of Imperial Palaces under Napoléon saw a rise in demand for carpet production. The Napoleonic emblem in the present lot exemplifies this renewed interest. The six-branch star is similar to but not identical to that of the Légion d'Honneur -demonstrating that it was intended for a fashionable interior rather than a military or official setting.
A similar example can be found in the Tuileries Salle du Trône -this example was woven for the wedding of Napoléon and Marie-Louise circa 1806-1810) and is now in the Louvre (inv. OA 10284).
A large carpet designed with the same emblems was woven in Tournai by the Piat Lefebvre manufacture for the Emperor's Grand Cabinet at Saint-Cloud. It can now be found in the Mobilier National.
Louis de La Hamayde de Saint-Ange was the designer for the Garde-Meuble since the early 19th century. He was the pupil of architects Fontaine and Percier. As well as the more well known Savonnerie manufactory, Saint Ange provided private manufactures with designs including Sallandrouze de Lamornaix in Paris and Aubusson, or Piat Lefebvre in Tournai, with unsigned projects.
The texture and the execution of this carpet may be attributed to the Piat Lefebvre manufacture, whose exported to Germany, Italy, Russia and America. The client could choose between variants of drawings and three levels of quality, such as the « façon de savonnerie, superfin » as in this case.
