Provenance
Sotheby's London, Haute Epoque, Important Early Furniture Works of Art & Tapestries,
31st October, 2006 Lot 103
Giving the illusion of a twisted shaft, the offered lot demonstrates the accomplished work of the late medieval stonemason, with the niche type panelled mouldings set on the diagonal to create a striking visual effect. Its considerable height, together with its centrally recessed top—still retaining traces of lead—strongly suggest that it once may have served as the base for a sundial. A comparable sundial pedestal is preserved at Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire.
