A wool 'au petit point' embroidery table carpet

Circa 1660-1670, probably a French workshop,
Woven in rich wools, on dark brown ground, designed with flower crowns, garlands and bouquets, scrolling leaves and spiralling tendrils, with wear and a little dry to the touch 403cm x 195cm overall approximately

The present lot exemplifies the designs of the ornamentalists Georges Baussonet and Paul Androuet du Cerceau. Both designers were influenced by the art and patterns found in Persian art. These carpets can be linked to the Savonnerie carpets from the same period. We can compare the present lot with one delivered for Maria Theresa of Austria, now in the Mobilier national.
