Among the earliest European shapes crafted in Chinese porcelain was the gin bottle; a Portuguese armorial piece from around 1600 is housed in the British Museum, and blue-and-white examples from the 17th century have also been identified. These bottles held notable appeal in New Spain, with this striking famille rose design especially prized in Mexico.
For a comparable matched set of four bottles, see Christies New York, The Tibor Collection: A Noble Eye for Chinese Export, 10 April 2019, lot 18.
