A French gilt bronze mounted Chinese porcelain gin bottle

The porcelain probably Yongzheng dynasty (1678-1735), produced for the Mexican market, the gilt bronze mount probably late 18th century
The rectangular body decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels with arched panels of flowering foliate jardinières with red cell borders above a swept lobed collar, raised on a beaded edged panelled square plinth footed base, With cracks and restorations to all sides 32cm high, the base 11.3 x 11.6cm overall

Among the earliest European shapes crafted in Chinese porcelain was the gin bottle; a Portuguese armorial piece from around 1600 is housed in the British Museum, and blue-and-white examples from the 17th century have also been identified. These bottles held notable appeal in New Spain, with this striking famille rose design especially prized in Mexico.
