Sebastiaen Slodtz (1655–1726) was a Flemish sculptor who trained in Antwerp before moving to France, where he became a court sculptor under King Louis XIV. He played a significant role in the sculptural decoration of Versailles, creating key works such as Aristaeus fettering Proteus (1714) at the Bassin d'Apollon and Hannibal counting the rings of the Roman knights killed at the Battle of Cannae for the allée royale, the offered lot being a 19th century reduction of this piece. His sculpture of Hannibal was designed as a pendant to Nicolas Coustou's Julius Caesar and was executed by Slodtz based on a terracotta model by François Girardon.
