Illustrated
A. Bowett, Early Georgian Furniture, 1715-1740, 2009, Woodbridge, pl. 3:45, p. 118.
Described therein as a 'Double chest of drawers' and dated to the period 1715-1725, the offered lot appears illustrated in A. Bowett, op.cit. The Palleday ink inscription and signature on this tallboy also feature in the same book, op.cit, pl. 1:4, p. 14. As the author notes, an important aspect to reference is the fact that this was clearly written by a literate individual rather than being information presented in the form of a printed label. Thus it seems almost certainly the case that the above was a product of the cabinet maker William Palleday himself.
Another example of a piece of furniture inscribed in an almost identical manner to this is a walnut bureau cabinet of circa 1715, which is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, 1996, Leeds, fig. 704, p. 361.
