Antoine-Louis Barye (French 1795-1875) A patinated bronze model of 'Ours Assis'

The reclining bear grasping his right hind leg, signed and stamped and numbered BARYE and BARYE 16 the whole raised on integral oval stepped base, 20.8cm wide, 15cm deep, 14cm high (8in wide, 5 1/2in deep, 5 1/2in high)

Footnotes

The first edition of this highly successful model was produced in 1838 and the use of the numbered stamp 'BAYRE 16' along with the style of the signature date this cast according to Michael Poletti and Alain Richarme to having been cast somewhere between 1838 and 1850.
