An unusual Brussels Comedia del'Arte tapestry fragment

C.1710, probably from the workshop of Van de Borght (d.1774)
Woven in wools and silk, designed with four central figures, the gentleman to the left wearing a turban and winged mask, possibly representing Pantalone, the gentleman opposite him wearing a simple skull cap and dark mask, probably the Dottore, the tall figure behind to the right wearing an elaborate turban, the female, partially obscured to the bottom right with delicate chignon, a row of pearls at her throat and dressed in decadent blue robes and scarlet dress, possibly representing Columbine, later mounted and with blue outer slip,

Van der Borght belonged to one of the most prominent tapestry weaving dynasties in Brussels. He obtained his privileges in 1726. He initially worked with his father Jasper (d.1742) and later with his brother Pieter (d.1763).
