The original monumental groups by Antoine Coysevox, 'Mercury Rising on Pegasus' and 'Fame Riding Pegasus', were completed around 1702 and have stood at the entrance of the Tuileries Gardens in Paris since 1719. They were so admired that Louis XIV granted the sculptor, then Director of the Academy of Painting and Sculpture, the highest pension ever awarded to an artist during his reign
