An Austrian late 19th century walnut, satinbirch, amaranth, burr elm and marquetry centre table by Franz Wiesauer (1833-1904)

1875-1890, in the Historicist or 'Antiquarian' style
The top of elongated octagonal outline, inlaid with conforming concentric tablets within multiple strung surrounds, the central tablet replete with a sand-shaded scrolled acanthus, stylised foliate and honeysuckle inlaid design, encompassed by a stylised scrolled foliate border, with a cavetto moulded edge, on a central ring turned disc-and-baluster column with four spiral twist turned subsidiary supports, the quadriform base carved with griffin busts and scrolled foliage, terminating in scrolled feet, the underside applied with a printed paper label which reads: 'Franz Wiesauer, Kunsttischler [Cabinet Maker]... Gmunden', 113cm wide x 80cm deep x 77cm high, (44in wide x 31in deep x 30in high)

Footnotes

The cabinet maker, Franz Wiesauer, who is responsible for the offered lot, is documented in a book completed by Gunter Dimt, and subsequently published in 2019. This is entitled Franz Wiesauer: Kunsttischler in Gmunden, 1833-1904. The work constitutes one part of a series called Studies on the Cultural History of Upper Austria, a publication by O.Ö. Landes-Kultur GmbH. The volume in question centres upon the life and career of F. Wiesauer who is recorded as a maker of furniture located in Gmunden, Austria until his death in 1904.
