Byrne Bond Street Liverpool
The substantial case surmounted by a cast tied laurel wreath mount over a caddy top with moulded detailing and cast brass mounts to each corner, each corner topped with large pineapple finials. The front centred by a pair of cherubs holding a cartouche with an engraved armorial crest above a dial framed by cherub-head cast spandrels and a centrally mounted winged triumphant cherub. The sides fitted with large cast sound frets, further surrounded by brass mounts, all terminating on a plinth base and raised on four robust brass feet. The clock further elevated on a large glazed presentation cabinet, the front with a large presentation plaque inscribed: "Presented to Brigadier General Shinkwin on his retirement from the command of the Mersey Brigade by the officers of the... as a mark of appreciation of his service..." The 7-inch dial with Arabic numerals separately silvered the main dial ground with cast radiating sunburst decoration, with blued steel hands, signed in the bezel Byrne, Bond Street, Liverpool. The robust triple fusee movement with anchor escapement, chiming the quarters on a selection of steel gongs and striking the hours on a large single gong. 185cms (73ins) high.

Footnotes

The Liverpool Brigade, later 165th (Liverpool) Brigade was an infantry brigade of Britain's Volunteer Force which was originally created following an invasion scare in 1859, and its constituent units were progressively aligned with the Regular British Army during the later 19th Century.
The Mersey Brigade was one of the formations organised at this time and its task was to defend the important Mersey Estuary, including the Port of Liverpool.
By 1895 the headquarters for the Mersey Brigade were recorded as being at Altcar Camp, near Hightown, Liverpool under the command of retired Colonel Robert Shinkwin who had served with the 59th Foot in the Second China War.
