The painting captures Ô Quan Chưởng, the historic gateway of Hanoi's Old Quarter. Standing for centuries, this architectural landmark symbolises the strength and resilience of the city—firm and protective like a father figure. The painting fuses the past and present, showing how history remains deeply rooted in everyday lives.
At the bottom of the painting, figures in traditional nón lá (conical hats) are seen selling flowers and vegetables—an enduring image of Hanoi's street vendors, bringing rural life into the urban landscape. The presence of a bicycle suggests the continuity of daily routines, unchanged by time.
