The depiction of paired mandarin ducks in lotus ponds was a typical theme for porcelains during the Ming dynasty, particularly in the Xuande period. A Xuande prototype of this design is illustrated in Imperial Porcelain of the Yongle and Xuande Periods Excavated from the Site of the Ming Imperial Factory at Jingdezhen, Hong Kong, 1989, pl. 89.

Bowls of this type remained popular during the Qing period. See a similar example, Qianlong seal mark and of the period, sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 26 May 2014, lot 128; and another pair of Jiaqing examples sold at Christie's New York, 19 September 2014, lot 841.
