Footnotes

The present lot features a decorative style that is more austere than that of the Warring States period, reflecting the social trend of simplifying the elaborate during the Western Han dynasty.

The garlic-head flask derives its name from the decorative ring resembling garlic cloves adorning its mouth. This design serves not only as decoration but also enhances grip stability and facilitates carrying with a cord. Below the bulb rests a flat, circular body, creating a low, compact form with a stable centre of gravity. Suitable for both display and portable use, it perfectly aligns with the Han people's pragmatic, minimalist aesthetic preferences and practical needs. It epitomizes the transition of Han Dynasty bronze ware from ritual vessels of the Shang and Zhou dynasties to everyday utensils, preserving a simple stylistic approach while radiating a strong sense of its era.
