Footnotes

The present circular mirror features an iron backing as its base material. Employing the highly intricate technique of inlaid gold and silver filigree, gold and silver threads are meticulously embedded into the mirror's reverse surface, forming an exquisitely flowing phoenix bird motif. The phoenix spreads its wings in flight, rendered with graceful, dynamic lines. Surrounding it are clouds, feather patterns, and geometric motifs, creating a complex yet vibrant composition. This design showcases exceptional metalworking skills while embodying auspicious and sacred symbolism. Iron mirrors were relatively uncommon during the Eastern Han Dynasty, and the inlaid gold and silver technique was even rarer. Combining these exceptional materials with exquisite decorative craftsmanship, this mirror stands as a vital physical testament to Eastern Han metalworking, decorative aesthetics, and auspicious beliefs, possessing immense artistic and historical value.
