This ornament features a copper body that underwent casting, polishing, and shaping processes to ensure a smooth surface before being inlaid with gold and silver. Specifically, gold and silver sheets were first cut and hammered into specific shapes, then embedded into pre-made grooves to form the dragon pattern. After inlaying, meticulous polishing ensured the gold and silver lay perfectly flush with the copper base. Final polishing achieved the exquisite visual effect of gold and silver patterns on a copper base.
This type of ornament primarily served as decorative elements for clothing, belts, horse tack, lacquered woodware, or chariot fittings. They were commonly found adorning robes, jade belts, lacquered shields, or chariot ornaments. The lustrous metal and imposing patterns signified the wearer's status and prestige. This ornament with gold and silver inlay epitomizes the pinnacle of craftsmanship and aesthetic refinement from the Warring States period to the Western Han dynasty. Using metal as its medium, it seamlessly integrates masterful technical skill, spiritual aspirations, artistic expression, and symbols of social status.
