The Tang Dynasty marked the pinnacle of ancient Chinese gold and silver craftsmanship. Influenced by the flourishing trade along the Silk Road and the intermingling of diverse cultures, the nobility embraced luxurious dressing boxes and utensils.

This gilt-silver box is a typical works of art of the High Tang period. It is shaped like a six-petal flower; the centre of the lid is engraved with a Baoxiang flower, surrounded by scrolling vine pattern, against the intricate ground. Hammering from silver sheet, the vessel boasts a thin, even surface, demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship. The Baoxiang flower motif is meticulously carved with fine chiseling techniques, then gilded throughout, and finally polished to enhance the layered texture. As a delicate container for rouge, powder, or facial makeup, this box embodies the exquisite craftsmanship of the prosperous time of the Tang Dynasty, the cultural fusion of the Silk Road, and the refined lifestyle of Tang women, embodying the grandeur of the Tang dynasty within its compact form.
