Footnotes

This repousse-decorated earring is modelled in C-shaped with a notch on one side. The hook is plain and finely polished, while the main body casted with radial pattern. A small circular aperture is drilled at the bottom for hanging other ornaments.

During the Shang Dynasty, earrings were primarily made of bronze and were worn by the nobility. Some were gilded or inlaid with turquoise. Gold earrings are extremely rare, yet this simple piece carries profound religious connotations and symbolizes power. Its craftsmanship and decorative features are consistent with those of contemporary bronze ritual vessels, vividly embodying the Shang social concept of 'embodying ritual within the vessel'. It is also important for studying the development of craftsmanship and aesthetic during the Shang dynasty.
