Footnotes
The present hairpin modelled with a slender, straight foot that tapers to a point, ensuring secure placement within a bun. The head of the hairpin features a 'shou' character in seal script crafted with exquisite filigree craftsmanship. Layers of gold wire are superimposed to create a three-dimensional relief effect, creating distinct layers of depth amidst the play of light and shadow. The seal script character is rich and full in form, with a filigree-crafted gemstone support in the centre but lacking the original gemstone.
Gold filigree hairpins with the character 'shou' (longevity) were often used as gifts or ceremonial objects in imperial birthday celebrations during Qing dynasty. Their craftsmanship and material used were unparalleled, and they were often exclusively worn by women of the first rank or members of the imperial family. This pair of gold filigree hairpins perfectly embodies the highest level of Qing dynasty metalwork, the essence of traditional auspicious culture, and the epitome of imperial aesthetics. They represent both the pinnacle of metalwork and a quintessential embodiment of the cultural concept of 'using objects to convey moral values'.
