Breitling is recognized as a trailblazer in the development of chronograph wristwatches during the early 20th century. In 1933, the brand made a significant breakthrough by patenting the first chronograph with two pushers. This innovation allowed users to measure multiple time intervals consecutively without needing to reset the chronograph each time, a major advancement in watchmaking. Following this milestone, Breitling introduced the Navitimer, a model that would become iconic among aviation professionals and watch enthusiasts. Launched in 1952 and derived from the earlier 1942 Chronomat, the Navitimer retained the distinctive slide rule bezel, giving it a similar look. It was specifically designed for pilots, with early versions featuring the double-wing logo of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) on the dial. The reference 806 was the first Navitimer model, and those bearing the AOPA logo were exclusively made for the U.S. market, identifiable by the "WOG" import stamp, representing Wakmann Watch Co., Breitling's official U.S. distributor.
The current lot, a 1959 Breitling Navitimer ref. 806 "AOPA," is a prime example of this celebrated chronograph. Breitling has verified its production date as June 1959. It boasts a well-preserved dial with beautifully aged luminous markers and hands, and an unpolished case that retains its sharp edges and original bevels, a rarity for early models that were often heavily used. These early Navitimers are highly coveted by collectors, and this particular piece offers a valuable opportunity for aviation and watch aficionados to own a classic from the pioneers of the two-pusher chronograph.
