Chun Kwang Young is recognized as a pioneering figure in Korean hanji (traditional mulberry paper) art world. Through his groundbreaking artistic practice, he transforms hanji — a centuries-old Korean material — into a sculptural language infused with contemporary sensibility. During his studies in the United States in 1971, Chun encountered the currents of Western modern art. Yet amid the sense of cultural displacement and estrangement, he ultimately chose to return to the roots of his own heritage.

The work Aggregation 05-D059, presented here, belongs to Chun's iconic Aggregation series, begun in 1995. It not only exemplifies his radical redefinition of the spatial dimension of hanji but also enacts a cultural ritual that continues the life of tradition within a contemporary framework.

The conception of the Aggregation series originates from Chun's childhood memory of herbal medicine bundles hanging from the ceiling of a pharmacy in his hometown. These triangular packages, wrapped in mulberry paper, became archetypal symbols in his artistic vocabulary. Through the painstaking process of hand-wrapping and binding countless triangular units—each containing fragments of hanji — Chun constructs vast, pulsating surfaces that evoke the topography of mountains and the rhythms of the earth. The repetitive act of wrapping becomes, for the artist, a meditative and contemplative ritual.

In Aggregation 05-D059, the canvas surface transforms into a textured terrain through the accumulation of innumerable micro-triangular forms. Light cascades along the angled units, creating a living interplay of shadow and illumination, as if the surface itself breathes. As viewers immerse themselves in the work's rhythm and depth, their perception becomes absorbed into a meditative state that transcends the physical dimension.

Light yet resilient, hanji here functions not merely as a material but as a vessel of history and emotion. Layer by layer, Chun enfolds personal memories within the work, allowing it to carry both collective cultural consciousness and individual life experience. In Chun Kwang Young's work, the realms of two and three dimensions, painting and sculpture, tradition and modernity converge in a dialogue of tension and harmony. His art quietly yet resolutely reveals how the profound roots of culture can be bound into eternity through the union of Eastern materials and contemporary form.
