Harmonie du Soir presents one of André Brasilier's most recognizable subjects, the majestic scene of riders and horses galloping along the seashore. Since his youth, the artist has been deeply captivated by the beauty of horses, making them a central motif that has continued to evolve throughout his artistic career. In an interview, he once remarked, "As for the horse, I really like this animal, as much for its beauty as for the harmony it has with nature... I love life, and the horse, with its elegant form and ardent spirit, delights and fascinates me."
In Harmonie du Soir, broad fields of color spanning the sky and sea evoke a vast horizon where sky and water seem to merge. The gradation from delicate pink to deep indigo recalls the rosy clouds illuminated by the setting sun, while the bright azure of the sea below reflects this glow, composing a scene that is at once expansive and lyrical. Along the surf's edge, white strokes mingle with the spray kicked up by galloping hooves, animating the lower register of the composition with a vivid sense of movement. The horses, rendered in Brasilier's signature sinuous forms, are articulated through light, rhythmic brushwork, demonstrating the artist's distinctive ability to capture both motion and spatial harmony.
Brasilier employs a harmonious and symbolically resonant composition, simplified forms, fluid brushwork, and a lyrical interplay of color to transform observed reality into a visual experience suspended between figuration and abstraction. The work exudes a romantic, almost mythic sensibility. Harmonie du Soir not only bears witness to the artist's sustained engagement with the rhythms of nature and life but also affirms his enduring fascination with and poetic interpretation of the timeless motif of the horse and rider.
