An embroidered leaf from a Buddhist ritual crown

Ming dynasty
embroidered against a ground of undyed silk twill weave, the Buddha's robe, the flames, and lotus base of encroaching satin stitches of subtle graduation of colours, the head covered with carefully arranged indigo knots, imitating the curls of hair, the Mandorla with a layer of pale blue net-stitches, his facial features and hands drawn with ink and accentuated with further stitches, a strand of curly pale silk extending from the painted Urna, all separated and within borders of couched fine gold threads, framed, the diadem panel 15.0cm high, frame 29.0 x 20.0cm
