The Elder Subhut is a student of the historic buddha Shakyamuni. Subhuti is considered by Tibetan Buddhists of the Gelugpa Tradition to be a pre-incarnation of the Panchen Lama line of incarnate teachers. This image of this current lot is based on a well known 18th century set of woodblock prints depicting all of the previous and then recently current Panchen Lamas. A series of similar images from the same woodblock prints can be accessed from the page Teacher: Subhuti (Early Patriarch) from the Himalayan Art Resources (HAR). These images can be found in public collections such as Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (acc.no.19.128), Rubin Museum of Art (acc.no.P2000.13.1), The British Museum (HAR #35631), and various other private collection.
