with 'cloud' collar and 'cloud and ruyi' hem decorated with 'lion' roundels in couched gold and beaded threads amongst embroidered floral patterns in satin stitches of shades of blue against an ivory ground, 92.0cm long, 172.0cm wide

Compare a similar overcoat of velvet silk, embroidered 'cloud' collar and 'cloud and ruyi' hem, see Verity Wilson, Chinese Dress, Victoria and Albert Museum, London: 1986, p.53-54, pl.36, the velvet silk in the book with a similar 'peony and butterfly' patterns as the current lot.

Velvet, in Chinese 'zhangrong', literally means velvet from Zhang, receives its name from the famous production hub of the town of Zhangzhou in Fujian province.

漳絨，因福建漳州是其著名的產地而得名。其織法是先用起絨桿將經線織成毛圈，然後在織物上繪花，再根據需要把圖案處的絨圈割斷，形成緊密簇立、色澤柔和的絨毛，利用絨圈與絨毛的不同紋理顯現花紋，具有花、地光度反差較強的裝飾效果。
