This lot is accompanied with a correspondence between Dominic Jellinek and Mr Cheong comparing the two vases, "... The finer of the two has on the base in iron red: HONG XIAN YU ZHI; and the second, which rather less good decoration, is marked on the base DE SHAN TANG ZHI (made for the Hall of Virtue and Goodness), also in iron red. The decoration on the second vase is very close to that on the first in inspiration, but would appear to be less well executed. As far as one can be sure, I believe the Hong Xian marked piece to be of the period, 1916, and my assumption is that the second vase is a slightly later piece; the two make a very interesting comparison."
