According to the Illustrated Regulations for Ceremonial Paraphernalia of the Imperial Dynasty, second rank civil officials are to wear surcoat with mid-night blue ground attached with rank badges of 'golden pheasant'. These surcoats are to be worn over the top of a dragon robe to display the rank of the wearer. For a portrait of an official wearing such surcoat over a dragon robe, see Christie's, New York, 17 Sep 2010, lot 1060. The 'golden pheasant' rank badge here is painted against a ground of bats and peaches, a different decorative scheme from the one in the current lot which is the Buddhist emblems. See a painting for the Ritual of such surcoat for a second rank civil official in the collection of V&A, acc.no.E.1764-1953, also a surcoat with rank badge for a military official, see Gary Dickinson & Linda Wrigglesworth, Imperial Wardrobe, London:1990, p.129. Compare with a similar surcoat for first rank civil official, see Christie's, New York, 25 Mar 2022, lot 1168.
Please note that this surcoat, with four roundels of font facing dragons, is for a price who has not been given title yet.
