In Alexandria Corniche, Anna Boghiguian captures the vibrant rhythm and atmosphere of her native city's famed seafront promenade. Executed in 2003, the painting exemplifies Boghiguian's instinctive and expressive approach to urban memory, where motion, colour, and emotion converge to form a living landscape.
Through sweeping brushstrokes of deep blue, ochre, and red, the Corniche unfolds as a site of ceaseless movement. Figures, cars, and palm trees appear in fleeting, fluid form, while the sea's expanse and the iconic curve of the coastal road evoke both the vitality and the melancholy of Alexandria. The red bus, a recurring emblem of the city's daily life, punctuates the scene with immediacy and familiarity.
As with much of Boghiguian's oeuvre, this work transcends mere representation to become a meditation on place, history, and transience, capturing Alexandria not as it appears but as it is remembered and felt.
