Marie Shayans was an accomplished Iranian painter, printmaker, and mosaic artist whose work formed part of Iran's vibrant modern art movement during the Pahlavi era. Trained in both Iran and Europe, she became active during the country's cultural renaissance of the 1960s, a period that saw the emergence of pioneering Iranian women artists exploring modernist forms and personal expression.
Shayans' practice spanned oil painting, gravure, and mosaic, combining traditional Persian motifs with modern abstraction. Her work frequently examined themes of femininity, identity, and memory, expressed through a refined and introspective visual language.
She participated in several important exhibitions, including the 4th Tehran Biennale (1964) where she received the Second Fine Arts Prize and represented Iran at the IV Biennale de Paris (1965). Her work was also shown internationally, including her final exhibition in Torino, Italy.
Despite her accomplishments, Shayans' career was disrupted by the Iranian Revolution of 1979, which curtailed her artistic recognition. Today, her oeuvre is being rediscovered as part of the broader narrative of Iran's early modernist generation.
