This work was rendered in lithography after an oil on canvas that Picasso painted in 1924, called Mandoline et Guitare, currently in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum, New York.

The present lithograph served as a proof for the edition of 1,000 lithographic posters printed by Ferdinand Mourlot for the exhibition held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at the Palais du Louvre in Paris, between April and June 1958, showcasing works from the Guggenheim collection in New York.
