Footnotes
Provenance
The vendor was an art student when she purchased this T-shirt directly from SEX in 1975, having been familiar with the shop on King's Road, Chelsea, for many years. She first shopped there when it was Let It Rock (Malcolm McLaren's store) at 15 or 16, and continued visiting when it was renamed Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die, before it ultimately became SEX.
In 1975, she attended the Sex Pistols' first-ever gig, held at St. Martin's School of Art, where they supported the rock and roll band Bazooka Joe. After seeing them perform, she bought the T-shirt along with a pair of black leather Vivienne Westwood jeans from SEX. The vendor personally knew the Sex Pistols, as two of her friends were dating Steve Jones and Paul Cook. She also hosted John Lydon and Sid Vicious at her flat in Notting Hill.
'Two Cowboys'
Featuring one of the most notorious and popular of the provocative designs produced by McLaren & Westwood during the punk era. Not only was it worn by members of the Sex Pistols, their coterie and fans during the group and the movement's emergence but it made the front page of The Guardian in 1975 when a customer was arrested for obscene display for flaunting one of the first sold from the shop in public in Piccadilly.
