OEBEN. Commode dite à la grecque en acajou
Elle repose sur des pieds courts fortement cambrés, disposés dans le prolongement des montants arrondis à sabots et chutes de bronze ciselé et doré. Elle ouvre en façade à double ressaut par deux tiroirs en longueur disposés sans traverses et un rang de trois en ceinture disposés à joints vifs. Plateau de marbre brèche violette profilé, mouluré à cavet. Garniture de bronze ciselé et doré telle que entrées de serrure et poignées de tirage.
Marque au feu deux fois CP couronné avec une ancre pour le château de Chanteloup.
Attribuée à Jean- François OEBEN (1710-1763) ou Simon OEBEN (1722-1786).
Epoque Transition vers 1760 (petites reprises dans les tiroirs et dans les fonds, marbre cassé et recollé).

A mahogany à la grecque chest of drawers. It stands on short, strongly arched legs extending from rounded jambs with chased and gilded bronze sabots and falls. The front opens into a double recess with two long drawers without crosspieces and a row of three finger-jointed drawers in the waistband. The top is profiled violet breche marble with a cavet moulding. Chased and gilded bronze trim such as lock escutcheons and drawer handles.
Double CP fire mark crowned with an anchor for the Château de Chanteloup.

Transition period circa 1760 (minor damage to drawers and backs, marble broken and reglued).

Très probablement livré pour Etienne FRANÇOIS, marquis de STAINVILLE, duc de CHOISEUL à Chanteloup à partir de 1761.
Duc de PENTHIÈVRE à Chanteloup.
La marque de Chanteloup nous donne une indication intéressante sur la datation de cette commode. En effet, le duc de CHOISEUL s'installe au château de Chanteloup en 1761 et entame directement une importante campagne de rénovation et d'aménagement. A la mort de CHOISEUL, un inventaire du mobilier est dressé en 1787 lorsque celuici est revendu au duc de PENTHIÈVRE qui marquera tous les meubles de la marque CP de part et d'autre d'une ancre sous couronne fermée.
Jean-François OEBEN réalise le mobilier du château de Ménars, demeure de madame de POMPADOUR et CHOISEUL s'en inspirera. Les commodes dites à la Grecque sont recensées au nombre de dixsept et toutes fournies par OEBEN entre 1761 et 1763. Simon OEBEN reprendra cette forme de commode notamment pour le château de Chanteloup.
En effet cette série de commodes à la Grecque est réalisée soit en bois d'acajou ou de bois de satiné.

Vente collection d'Alain et de Catherine BERNARD, Sotheby's le 23 septembre 2020, une autre commode est présentée (lot n° 98).
Vente Artcurial le 9 juillet 2024, une commode d'un modèle proche livrée pour le château de Fontainebleau.

Most probably delivered for Etienne FRANÇOIS, marquis de STAINVILLE, duc de CHOISEUL in Chanteloup from 1761.
Duke of PENTHIÈVRE at Chanteloup.
The Chanteloup mark gives us an interesting indication of the date of this chest of drawers. The Duc de CHOISEUL moved into the Château de Chanteloup in 1761 and immediately began a major renovation and refurbishment campaign. On the death of CHOISEUL, an inventory of the furniture was drawn up in 1787 when it was sold to the Duc de PENTHIÈVRE, who marked all the furniture with the CP mark on either side of an anchor under a closed crown.
Jean-François OEBEN designed the furniture for the Château de Ménars, the home of Madame de POMPADOUR, and CHOISEUL was inspired by it. There are seventeen commodes known as à la Grecque, all supplied by OEBEN between 1761 and 1763. Simon OEBEN took up this form of chest of drawers again, notably for the Château de Chanteloup.
This series of commodes à la Grecque is made of either mahogany or satinwood.

At Christie's sale in London on 6 July 2006, a similar chest of drawers was sold and given to Jean-François OEBEN (lot no. 207).
Sale of the Alain and Catherine BERNARD collection, Sotheby's on 23 September 2020, another chest of drawers was presented (lot n° 98).
Artcurial sale on 9 July 2024, a chest of drawers of a similar model delivered for the Château de Fontainebleau.
