A mid 18th century walnut veneered striking table clock

William Smith, London
The case surmounted by a brass knopped carrying handle over an inverted bell top with moulded edges, the front door fitted with pierced sound frets to the upper section and a simple brass lock escutcheon to the left-hand side, the sides with pairs of glazed observation windows and the back with further sound frets and glazed panel, all terminating in a moulded base, the clock now secured by a central mounting nut in place of the original block feet. The 7.5-inch brass dial with silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring enclosing a finely matted centre with redundant pendulum aperture and chamfered calendar window, framed by cast brass spandrels and signed in the break arch on a separate strike/silent subsidiary dial William Smith, London, with blued steel hands. The double chain fusee movement with five knopped pillars, striking the hours on a bell mounted above the backplate, now with anchor escapement, converted from the original verge, the backplate engraved with foliate scrolls and geometric motifs centred by a shell design. 56cms (22 inches) high.
