A late 17th century ebony veneered phase three striking table clock

Joseph Knibb, London
The restored case surmounted by a foliate tied-bud handle on a shallow caddy top decorated with applied brass mounts of a central tulip and floral swags to the front and back, over a moulded cornice with flat top, the front door with a pierced wood sound fret backed in red silk over a pair of typical Phase III Knibb escutcheons, the left for the lock. The sides and back door with glazed observation windows, resting on a moulded base. The 6.25-inch square brass dial with silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring interrupted by fleur-de-lys half-hour markers, the matted centre with chamfered calendar aperture below XII, framed by four brass winged cherub-head spandrels (now silvered) and signed to the lower edge Joseph Knibb London, with blued steel hands. The movement with thin plates united by five vase-shaped, turned and latched pillars, with verge escapement and double gut fusees, striking the hours via an outside count wheel on a single bright polished 'porkpie' bell. The backplate well engraved with tulips and foliate scrolls, signed in a central cartouche Joseph Knibb Londini Fecit. Ticking and striking. 34cms (13.5ins) high.
