The case surmounted by a cast silver carrying handle above a plain top with applied pierced silver panel depicting planets and a comet centred by a seated cherub. The moulded top over a finely decorated front with applied floral silver plaques, the left-hand panel depicting Spring and Summer, the right-hand panel Autumn and Winter, and the back panel cantered by Chronos surrounded by personifications of Dawn, Dusk, Day and Night. All raised on a moulded base with further applied silver mount to the front. The 2.5-inch Roman dial with skeletonised chapter ring, finely pierced silver Breguet-style hands framed by a cast silver mask depicting the four elements — Air, Fire, Water and Earth. The twin train movement fitted with lever platform escapement (platform replaced), striking the hours and half-hours on a blued steel gong mounted to the backplate, currently ticking and striking, stamped CV. 18cms (7ins) high.

William Comyns & Sons were well-regarded manufacturing silversmiths, first registered in London in January 1859. The above lot bears the firm's hallmark, which was in use during 1884–1885, and carries the date letter for 1884. William Comyns & Sons produced an extensive range of silverware — including ash trays, bowls, candelabra, claret jugs, frames, trays, and tea services and clocks.
