A first half of the 18th century Chinoiserie-decorated quarter-repeating bracket timepiece

William Tomlinson, London
The re-decorated case surmounted by a brass carrying handle over an inverted bell top with moulded edges, the front with pierced sound frets backed in old felt, the sides with glazed observation windows and further pierced sound frets, all terminating in a moulded base and raised on brass ogee feet. The whole decorated with chinoiserie motifs and resting on a later custom-made bracket. The 7-inch brass dial with Roman and Arabic numerals intercepted by floating lozenge half-hour markers, the centre with mock pendulum and calendar apertures enclosed by a wheatear-engraved border, all framed by cast brass spandrels and signed in the break arch on a separate name cartouche William Tomlinson, London. The single chain fusee movement with later anchor escapement, repeating the quarters on a nest of two bells and the hours on a larger separately mounted bell, the finely engraved backplate with flowing scrolls and floral decoration, a pair of flying birds to the upper section, and signed within a central name cartouche W. Tomlinson, London. Currently ticking and repeating. 48cms (19ins) high.
