the bezel carved with trailing foliage and flowers, centred by a bee hive below VI, on a plinth base, the 11 inch circular painted Roman dial boldly signed 'Chronometer' with matching hands and subsidiary running seconds dial below the centre, the spring driven gut fusee movement with maintaining power, the five-spoke 'scape wheel mounted on the backplate and with pivotted detent escapement, the pendulum with (repaired) brass rod and cylindrical bob. 52cms (20ins) high.

This escapement was designed in about 1860 to be very accurate. Although it has a short pendulum it can readily show seconds because of the 'passing' nature of its swing. The 'scape wheel is only unlocked on every other swing.
