A late 17th century walnut and marquetry veneered month duration longcase clock

R. Williamson, London
The case surmounted by a carved shell cresting over a moulded top with pierced sound fret backed in red silk, above a marquetry-decorated front flanked by twist columns and rectangular glazed observation windows to the sides, over a convex throat moulding. The long trunk door with three panels of floral marquetry, the central panel depicting a still-life with bird above an oval lenticle, the sides with line inlay, all above a moulded base on a marquetry-inlaid plinth. The 11 inch brass dial with Roman and Arabic numerals divided by fancy cruciform half-hour markers, the finely matted centre with floral engraving, Arabic subsidiary seconds dial, ringed winding squares and elaborately engraved calendar aperture, fitted with finely finished blued steel hands and framed by cast brass cherub-head spandrels. Signed along the lower edge of the chapter ring R. Williamson, London. The month-going, twin-train movement with an additional wheel in the going train to achieve the extended duration, united by five knopped pillars with anchor escapement with unusually shaped and decorated hole behind the backcock. The strike train with external countwheel, centrally mounted, striking the hours on a bell. Currently ticking and striking. Sold together with case key, pendulum, and a pair of brass-cased weights. 2.18m (7.12ft) high.
