A PAIR OF ITALIAN LATE REGENCY CARVED MAHOGANY ARMCHAIRS

In the manner of Henry Thomas Peters, Genoa, circa 1835
The carved stylised scrolled backs with scrolling acanthus leaf carved arms above leather upholstered seats on lappet carved and turned tapering legs, 58cm wide, 60cm deep, 93cm high (22 1/2in wide, 23 1/2in deep, 36 1/2in high).

Footnotes

The distinct features of this chair, including the oversized stylised anthemion, are in the manner of Henry Thomas Peters (1792-1852). The English cabinet maker moved to Genoa in 1817 where he established workshops in the former convent of Santa Brigida. He received commissions from the House of Savoy, first at the Royal Palace of Genoa and then from 1833 at the Royal Castle of Racconigi. He obtained the title of "Her Majesty's Cabinetmaker" in 1835 and received a silver medal at the 1846 Genoa Great Exhibition of National Manufactures and Products.
